Child Custody: Hell For Lesbian in Vermont
But what would you do if your ex - who you also had a baby with - claimed she was now straight and ran away with your child?
If you were any sort of normal person I'm guessing you'd be pretty pissed, quite frankly.
Well that's exactly what 'former-lesbian' Lisa Miller has done. Miller and her ex-partner Janet Jenkins got a Civil Union back in 2000 and Miller gave birth to little Isabella Miller-Jenkins in the same year. (That is not the family in question above - there we have an example of a real happy family.)
Now however, Miller has renounced homosexuality altogether and has pretty much gone into hiding in order to keep the child for herself.
The couple broke up way back in 2001, and courts in both Vermont and Virginia ruled in favour of Jenkins, even though she is not the birth mother. Miller did however have some custody over the child, but had since been warned that she may lose her custodial rights if she violated orders any further.
So Miller, who is now in hiding, was probably just scared of losing her daughter for good, but what was she thinking? Now her chances of seeing her daughter on a regular basis are next to nothing.
Jenkins has recently stated that she just wants "to be with her. Like any normal parent."

Make way for SuperBeals!
That's right, I want to worship Jennifer Beals. Also known as SuperBeals, 'The Beals', JJB and Bette Porter. Or, if you're straight, 'that chick from Flashdance.'
So why am I worshipping her? Well, can you think of a reason I shouldn't? Other than the fact that she's not gay, of course.
The main reason I'm writing this is because I've recently been re-watching The L Word from the beginning, and I realized that it is actually Beals who keeps everything together. The first season (clearly the best season) has so much dramatic content because of this lady. Keeps me on my toes she does.
In real life, Jennifer has done a lot to campaign for the rights of homosexuals. She frequently makes speeches about her life growing up as a bi-racial child that move people to tears. Her acting ability is second to none; go on, admit that you were stumped when you found out she was straight after watching L for the first time. No other straight actress makes lesbian sex scenes look so seamless.
So there we have it. This is why I love Superbeals.
Why do you love her?

Romeo and Julian?
Apparently, after a group of students from a mixed race and gender school in East London, it sparked a controversial argument about whether 'Romeo and Julian' (a play about tackling homophobia, based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet) should be allowed.
According to parents, they think it is ludicrous for 'such a literary masterpiece to be used as a basis for such a politically correct purpose'. Now, excuse me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't we be wanting to use well-known plays and books to put across today's issues so that the audience can relate to them?
Also, it was said that all parents want children to be learning 'Romeo and Juliet' and not 'Romeo and Julian'. Then tell me now why it is acceptable to teach children about suicide (which is not a part of every day human life - if you're emotionally stable, of course) but it is not acceptable to teach them about homosexuality (which is firmly a part of every day human life.)
Straight parents of the UK: the world is changing, get the f**k over it!

You learn something new every day...
Firstly, I learned the real definition of 'pugnacious.' Which isn't really relevant to this blog... And the second thing I learned was how absent homosexual rights were in America right up until 1996.
Yes, that's correct. Gay people had NO rights whatsoever until 1996. Can you believe that?! Apparently I learned this around 4 weeks ago in my American Civil Rights class at college, but it wasn't until I was doing a spot of revising that I actually paid attention to this part. According to American law, the first act passed for gay rights was in 1996, which protected homosexuals from state discrimination, and also barred the passage of any new 'anti-discriminatory' legislation against them.
Now I hate to sound like a broken record, but this makes me even more determined to abolish 'Proposition 8' in California. It is now obvious that most of the people who voted 'yes' on prop 8 were mis-informed about what it was about, and I think that if the vote was to be done again, proposition 8 would not exist.
So, without sounding like I'm nagging, please do everything you can to help the cause of prop 8, and get it over-turned once and for all! I'm not married personally, but I know how awful it must be to be kept from marrying the person you love, and a lot of people I know who it is being prejudice against say that it really hurts to know that even their 'friends' don't want them to be happy.
