being on campus

One of the things I love about being on UNT campus during the fall is being able to sit outside the Union and read, talk on the phone, observe people, etc. This makes another one of my favorite spot on Denton.

For all my friends that come here, this probably won't be any impact for you since most of you probably pass by this building on a consistent basis. But if you have 15-30 minutes of free time in between class sit in this area and just look at the people around you and life that is happening before you. (sounded like a motivational speaker there)

And if you don't go to UNT or live in Texas then you just get to hear about my favorite spots!

These were quickly shot with my phone, no fanciness going on here.
Did I mention HOW BEAUTIFUL THIS WEATHER HAS BEEN?!

late night = forgetting to post

I got too caught up in dancing around the apartment which caused me to forget that I needed to post another spot of mine in Denton. So you get two entries today..

Next spot, Denton Square, heart of Denton and where you really see the PEOPLE of Denton!
Why its a favorite: town hall is the middle where there is a huge grass field around it giving people lots of space to have gatherings, stores to shop/drink at including 2nd Street and Jupiter House

This fall weather makes the Square a perfect place to spend a night with good friends!

the Batcave

I'm completely aware that these pictures are horrible and were taken really fast so I could post this entry with another favorite spot of mine in Denton.

This house is the "Batcave", home to four great amazing men of God that I have come to know over the last year which has brought me so much joy!

Thank you guys for opening up your house to a goofy crazy loco girl and letting me drop off all my art stuff here during the day!

my favorite spot to go on sunday's

This favorite spot of mine happens to fall on Sundays because that's where I spend a lot of time.

Since living in Denton the past 3 years, I have come to fall more in love with the Village Church.

I love the people I have encountered, serving in the Little Village, getting taught by Matt Chandler/Beau Hughes, various speakers. I have learned more about my Jesus in my time being there than anywhere else and have come to see others come to know Him as well.

If you have the opportunity to go I would highly suggest it. There are 3 campuses: Denton, FlowerMound (main) and Dallas, so you can visit many places. The live feed from Denton/Dallas might catch you off guard but you get used to it within the first 5 minutes and it's so worth it!!

another favorite spot in denton

Picking out another favorite spot in Denton was easy to decide because one of my most loved places is my room! Yes I love my room since I spend the most time in it, I sleep/sometimes eat/think/pray/type/read/shower/change/read, almost everything.

I also love my room because A. I love my bed, B. I love my desk area, C. I love my lamp on the nightstand, D. I love my bed!

I'm so thankful for the room the Lord has provided for me and everything He has given to me to fill it up because in the end its ALL His!

[I apologize for the super grainy pictures]

new series i will hopefully do everyday this week

As I was was thinking what I wanted to write for this entry, I thought of a new blog series I could do for a week... MY FAVORITE SPOTS IN DENTON! Each day I will present you with one of MY favorite spots in Denton, TX and why I love it so much! Since I'm starting on Saturday, I'll go until the next Saturday with various place around this crazy city.

My first spot: Crooked Crust

[chicken, pepperoni, mushroom]

[some of my great friends: blake, mitch, keith and philip is on the other side of me]

I wish I had taken a picture of the sign outside and the cool light fixtures they have all around.

This is a semi-new spot in Denton, right on the corner of Fry St.
Why it's one of my favorites: affordable pizza deals ($5 1/4 pizza + drink), good chill atmosphere and floor to ceiling windows.

Thank you Crooked Crust for being one of my favorites!

The Miracle of Forgiveness

Just a warning... this is going to be one of those introspective posts, because I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately. I will put in some cute pictures of my kids to add some excitement. :)

Forgiveness... I have unwittingly considered myself a forgiving person before. I am naturally forgetful about most things, so it fits in that I forgive easily, right? I also try to forgive when I feel offended or hurt...

...but (hate that word in this scenario!)... through many heartfelt discussions with my husband, I have realized that I am the type that forgives 98% and holds onto that 2% of hurt to protect myself against being hurt again. Two percent isn't such a big deal, except for when you start adding it all up... the English teacher in jr. high who made me cry regularly, my terrible wedding DJ (isn't it so funny that I actually still feel resentment for this?!? I mean really, how immature can I be?!?), "friends" who hurt me, rejections and failures I hold onto too tight (aka, not fully forgiving MYSELF).

Does anyone else feel this way? Like forgiveness really is a Divine gift -- so against our "protect myself and survive" nature?

The thing is, when I think of myself and all of the dumb things I've done and said... I sincerely hope people forgive me for those mistakes. I want people to know that despite my "bad" moments, I am not a bad person (I hope). I want people to give ME the benefit of the doubt and see me as a person... not label or define me by one poor decision.

As our Savior said:
“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
“But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
“And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
“And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
“Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matt. 5:38–44, emphasis added).
Pretty powerful. And pretty clear. It gets down to trusting the Lord: If I trust the Lord's promises, I will give Him my heart. Part of that gift is giving up and letting go of the protective resentments I hold, with trust that the Lord's miracles will outweigh my own capacity to "protect" myself.

For even more motivation, in order for me to be forgiven fully, the Lord taught, I must first forgive fully:
“Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin.
“I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men” (D&C 64:9–10, emphasis added).

President Gordon B. Hinckley said it best in his epic October 2005 Conference talk, "Forgiveness":
"I know this is a delicate and sensitive thing of which I am speaking. There are hardened criminals who may have to be locked up. There are unspeakable crimes, such as deliberate murder and rape, that justify harsh penalties. But there are some who could be saved from long, stultifying years in prison because of an unthoughtful, foolish act. Somehow forgiveness, with love and tolerance, accomplishes miracles that can happen in no other way.
"The great Atonement was the supreme act of forgiveness. The magnitude of that Atonement is beyond our ability to completely understand. I know only that it happened, and that it was for me and for you. The suffering was so great, the agony so intense, that none of us can comprehend it when the Savior offered Himself as a ransom for the sins of all mankind.
"It is through Him that we gain forgiveness. It is through Him that there comes the certain promise that all mankind will be granted the blessings of salvation, with resurrection from the dead. It is through Him and His great overarching sacrifice that we are offered the opportunity through obedience of exaltation and eternal life" (emphasis added).
I pray that I can finally learn to forgive and let go of all the little things I harbor... and that we all can learn to have more love and trust and less resentment.

AND I ask any of you whom I might have offended to forgive me. I will sincerely try to do the same, forgiving completely and in a way that only comes through the Atonement of the Savior.

I know that Jesus is the Christ and that His way is the way of love and forgiveness. I know that as we follow Him-- even when we can't comprehend "why" or even "how"-- He will bless us.

Last Fall..

Last fall I was learning about the elements of design..

Last fall I was seeing what it looks like for so many women to be in love with the Lord like I am..
Last fall I got my first & only tattoo I will get..
Last fall was so beautiful and warm and wonderful...
which makes me so joyful for this fall season!!

So...Happy first day of Fall!

If You Don't Like It... GO HOME.

Chances are, you are probably aware of the, as what can only be described as 'stupid', law in the American constitution known as 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'.

This ruling sees that homosexuals in the US Army are fired and discharged from their units once they are found to be gay, lesbian or bisexual.

Ridiculously, the 'justification' behind this law being passed is that apparently homosexuality within a unit can affect the cohesion and morale of the group as a whole, with heterosexual soldiers claiming that they are distracted and disgusted by their gay service members.

This week, Lady Gaga - one of the worlds most famous, committed gay rights fighters - gave a speech in Maine, in which she made a series of incredibly valid points in favour of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Perhaps most significantly, she suggested creating a new rule, in which instead of sending home the homosexual soldiers within the army, we should send home the homophobic. We should send home those who believe that someone's sexuality is 'wrong' and we should send home those that believe gay people working alongside them affects their performance on the front line.

Gaga also made the point that when signing up to the army, you make an oath to protect your country and everyone in it. This is supposedly because you love your country and it's citizens so much that you are willing to risk your life to fight for it.

However, doesn't this also mean that you have made the oath to protect the gay people in your country too? Doesn't this mean that you love the gay people within your country? Well, that's what you swore into when you joined, so why would anyone who promised such a thing feel the need to be protected by Don't Ask, Don't Tell?

Quite poignantly, Gaga helps the crowd realize that the homophobic soldier is not filled with said love for his country, but rather that his 'loyalty' towards his country is tethered by hate towards certain members of his unit.

Unfortunately, DADT was not repealed this week, but that doesn't mean we can't keep fighting.

You can watch the full length speech from Lady Gaga by clicking here.
